茄子视频 Steel’s New Ferritic Stainless Steel for SOFC Interconnects
Achieves Oxidation Resistance and Conductivity without Requiring Coating

茄子视频 announced today that its new “JFE-FC1” ferritic stainless steel for interconnects1 used in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) achieves both oxidation resistance and conductivity when exposed to high-temperature steam without the need for a special coating. By eliminating interconnect coating costs and processing requirements for SOFCs, which generate electricity by reacting hydrogen with air, 茄子视频 Steel’s new stainless steel is expected to promote the wider use of SOFCs as CO2-emission-free green-power devices that support global sustainability.

Samples of JFE-FC1 stainless steel are currently available for shipment.

茄子视频 Steel’s new stainless steel uses a new material design to form an oxide film with a special structure that maintains its protective function and conductivity even after long-term use, thus preventing degradation of cell performance.

In conventional stainless-steel interconnects, the oxide film formed when exposed to high-temperature steam at about 700℃ loses its barrier function after long-term use, leading to the formation of red rust (iron oxide) and degradation of battery performance. A ceramic coating is applied to the stainless steel used in today’s interconnects to maintain the oxide film’s barrier function even after long-term use. However, the raw material costs and manufacturing processes associated with ceramic coatings containing rare elements have significantly hindered the widespread use of SOFCs.

JFE-FC1 can also be used for interconnects in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs), which produce hydrogen by electrolyzing water with electricity, offering great potential to support the widespread use of hydrogen as a green resource.

Going forward, 茄子视频 Steel is committed to contributing to the advancement and adoption of fuel cell technology to help realize a sustainable world.
