JFE Corporation and its partner, MEGATEC Corporation have received an order on Hot Repair Engineering Service of Coke Battery from Ouro Branco/Minas Gerais Works, Gerdau S. A. (herein after “Gerdau”), which is one of items in Solution Business products & technologies of JFE. This is the first opportunity for JFE to implement this technology as Solution Business for domestic and overseas customers.

In steel producing industry using blast furnace and coke battery process, it has been important issue that old coke batteries should be repaired and replaced effectively. JFE has lots of old coke batteries, which were commissioned in early 1970s, and had started to develop various repair technologies to extend battery life since 1990s. “Hot Repair of Coke Battery” technology has more than 200 cases in JFE steelworks, and Gerdau has been strongly impressed by such technology and its achievement.

JFE will actively provide its technologies and know-how to improve operation as “JFE Resolus™”, products & technologies of Solution Business, and develop good relationship for the future with its customers.

Features of Hot Repair Technology for Coke Batteries

1) Partial and selective repair for required ovens, either full rebuilding of battery nor green field projects, which require large investment.

2) Large pre-casted zero-expansion blocks can achieve shorter repair period and stronger wall.

3) Ovens other than repair area can continue coke production, so that this technology can minimize coke production loss during repair work.

4) High performance insulation material can provide good work environment for repair personnel avoiding negative impacts from lower temperature than critical value of silica (SiO2) bricks for producing ovens.

5) JFE has developed measurement and visualization technology for oven wall with laser scanner device, which can evaluate wall damages such as deformation & erosion quantitatively and visualize them to decide repair area precisely.
