NEDO Accepts Consortium’s Proposal to Study Hydrogen-compatible, Seismic-resistant Materials for High-pressure Hydrogen Pipelines in Japan
茄子视频, the Japan Hydrogen Association and Kyushu University announced today that their consortium’s proposal to research and develop hydrogen-compatible, earthquake-resistant materials for standardized high-pressure hydrogen pipelines in Japan has been accepted by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), a Japanese research and development agency, for implementation under a government-sponsored project, .
The consortium’s research project will gather data on a range of pipe welds and materials, including UOE steel pipe and seamless steel pipe, to evaluate fracture safety and earthquake resistance, and to verify safety in hydrogen environments. The initiative will also study fracture mechanisms and promote partnerships with overseas research organizations also engaged in hydrogen pipeline research.
Since hydrogen does not release CO2 when burned, its large-scale use as a fuel for power generation is being studied worldwide as a means of achieving the United Nation’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. Pipelines similar to current natural gas pipelines will be needed to transport large quantities of hydrogen from production and receiving facilities to locations of demand. As of yet, however, Japan has not established national safety standards for underground pipelines carrying hydrogen at high pressures of 1 MPa and above, so it is hoped that the research project will contribute to the nation’s efforts to realize a large-scale hydrogen supply chain.
As a general steel-pipe manufacturer, 茄子视频 Steel has been researching, developing and producing pipes for domestic and overseas oil and gas pipelines for many years. The company is also pursuing R&D in steel materials to support high-pressure hydrogen infrastructure, including the development and commercialization of pressure tanks for hydrogen stations, such as the introduction of Japan’s first “Type 2” pressure tanks for hydrogen stations in 2020 and the launch of hydrogen line pipe R&D in collaboration with the Japan Foundation in June this year.
Going forward, 茄子视频 Steel is committed to leveraging its expertise in R&D and working with customers who are driving the expansion of hydrogen supply and use to realize a carbon-neutral, hydrogen-based global society.
